Much like the webOS address book, which displays all the information available from multiple different sources, like Google, FaceBook, and Microsoft Exchange servers, the calendar works the same way. Palm Pre’s webOS can pull calendar information from a variety of sources and display it all together, with entries color-coded by their source (by default, blue for Palm, green for Google, and yellow for FaceBook events). If all of this information at once sounds a bit overwhelming, don’t worry, you can choose to display or hide the data from the individual sources. When there’s an event scheduled from a calendar that’s being hidden, its time slot is  a slightly different shade, so that you know there’s something happening then.

But I’m getting ahead of myself here… let’s start by opening the calendar first;

That’s what month view and week view look like. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s dive into my afternoon today, shall we?

You can select which calendar sources you want to have displayed by tapping on the button that reads “All” at the top right of the screen. For my purposes I’m leaving it at “All” but here’s what it looks like.

Like I mentioned above, the green items by default are from your Google calendar, the yellow is from FaceBook, and blue is from your Palm profile but more on that later. Let’s check on my lunch date with Sam.

All of this information was grabbed from my Google calendar but it is completely editable on the Pre’s calendar and it would sync back and update on Google.

Now say you want to create a new even right in your phone. Well you can do that one of two ways… by tapping on an empty slot or going into the application and selecting “New” and then “Event.”

Begin by filling out the information, like I did below,

calendar11

The event will default to my default calendar account, which for me is Google but instead of having it listed on my Google, I’d rather have it filed under my Palm profile… and that’s easy. Tap on the “Google” button up towards the top right and change it!

calendar12calendar13

See how easy that was? And now it appears in the empty slot;

Here’s what the Preferences/Settings look like for the Calendar:

As you can see, you can, like with the contacts, sync at any time manually or instead just wait a couple of minutes for the phone to do it for you.

Another app, another day, another reason to love Palm and having waited (not so patiently) for the Pre.

Hi there. In regards to Google calendar, will it sync only the main calendar, or can it sync other calendars within the main account?

  2. xShadow

    It look so sweeet! >_<

  3. kindaskimpy

@Iain Harley, I’m sorry I can’t say since I only have one calendar within my account.

This is cool, thanks for sharing.

To me, though, the most important thing is how it will handle multiple google calendars. I have about 15, as I use it to schedule rooms and events for work, but I AT LEAST need it to sync with both my work and personal google calendars.

Is the pre capable of assigning color categories to appointments like outlook? Is it capable of syncing outlook categories? I use outlook categories extensively, assigning different colors to different types of appointments. I have been hopeful that the color categories will carry over to the pre.

    This is awesome! THANKS!

  7. I have a google account for businesses tied to my domain that is:

    username@mydomain.com instead of username@gmail.com

Can I still use my google email (username@mydomain.com) and sync to my calendar, contacts.. etc (which are exactly the same online software that @gmail.com users use) or will it not work?

    Nice Shots -thanks

I’m pretty sure that it CAN sync multiple Google Calendars. During the CES demo, they showed a main Google Calendar, plus a US Holidays Google Calendar, the weather icons from the Google Calendar weather, plus they showed one for the San Jose Sharks. That being said, it would be easy for you to test it out by adding a public calendar in Settings>Calendars> Browse Public Calendars.

Although the device is wicked – Palm once again has not listened to their long term customers about how lacking the Month view is of their calendar application.

Oh, well at least they are “open” with the Web OS so that true software developers will get something that is truly useable to view your month at a glance like so many of us need.

On the calendar area where you have the location name it says home and there is a litre compass icon.
If there is is an address in the location area on the calendar is it clickable? So when you tap on it if there is an address will it take you the maps app and show you that location on the map?
Just wondering, that would be cool! :)

    Looks really nice!!

Even though the dialogs rise some questions:

    1. Can you invite other participants?
    2. Is it possible to use free reminder times (e.g. 4 days)?
    3. Are multi-day events (e.g. workshop from Mo-Fr) supported?
    4. Does the repeat plan support free periods (e.g. every 3 months)?
    5. Can you delay the reminder notification of an event up to a certain time (e.g. “remind me again at 6:00pm”)?

hello…i was wondering if synergy also worked for showing birthdays that are on facebook, and do they appear atuomatically on my calendar on the pre?

  14. Tyler!

I was wondering… From the Pre’s calendar can you change which cloud calendar your appointment belongs to? Also, can an appointment on the Pre belong to multiple cloud calendars?

Like contacts from Facebook and Gmail, I need the Pre to intelligently know that I might have one thing scheduled across three different calendars. Does it do that?

  15. I’ve read plenty about Gmail, but what about Yahoo! Mail? I have a Gmail acct, but use Yahoo! Should I switch now, or keep Yahoo!???

  16. Todini

Is there a ‘template’ feature available on the Pre’s calendar? I run db6 on my treo, and I use that feature ALOT!! Thnx 4 checkin.

  17. Can you email someone else a calendar event ? Meeting ? Or can the event be txt to someone? That would be a great feature instead of emailing or texting new data to someone and going back and forth.

  18. KLynn

    1) can you set up more than one calendar under Palm Profile?
    2) can you search the Calender app like you can Contacts, Tasks & Notes just by typing?

  19. Derek

Does the Pre color-code calendar categories like the Palm Desktop does for my Treo 700p (for example red for “Important,” green for “Personal,” etc.)? It’s nice to be able to see at a glance what types of appointments you have.

  22. Iceman

On Meet the Pre there was weather on top when you opened up the calender app, does anyone know how to get this to display on our pre?

  23. tushdr

Can the pre sync to public calendars on outlook 2003 sitting on exchange sever 2003? If so does it do it wirelesssly or do you neeed to be physically connected to a computer on th network????

We have an outlook calander at work for more than one person. I would like to wirelessly sync to this public calendar.

  24. Iain Harley

@kindaskimpy It’s a little late, but thanks for answering my question.

  25. Well Done! I Like it!
