In the style of our “Meet the ‘Tasks’ app on the Pre” story, I figured I’d also introduce you to its sibling, the Memos app. It’s just as useful and intuitive as the “Tasks” but simply serves a different purpose. Have a look.

Once you’ve tapped on the “Memos” icon in the launcher, you will be greeted with a screen much like this one, except, again, I’ve populated this one already whereas a new one would be empty. Aw, don’t all your multi-colored memos look pretty?

Need to create a new memo? Simple. Tap on the “New Memo” sticky pad up at the left hand corner and you get a brand new memo sticky pad for yourself that would looking something like this: (color might vary)

Need to edit something in the memo? Go right ahead! Tap where it says “Memos” up at the top left and utilize the application menu for whatever you need. Perhaps a copy and paste? (wink wink iPhone. I jest, of course. We know you’ll be getting this functionality soon, iPhone users… two years after launch.)

Want to see what your memos would look like? Here you go.

And there you have it, my fellow Goons. The Memos app. Just as slick as the rest of the package.

UPDATE: Feel like changing the color of your memo sticky? Tap the bottom right corner of the note, where it is slightly folded and this comes up:

    Nice, I can’t get enough of these screenshots!

  2. PreMan

    What happens if you have like 100 memos? Can they been shown in a list?

  3. Longster

    Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you could scroll left/right just like you scroll through numbers of apps in app catalog.

  4. Kenny

    Is there a way to change the look to a list view in case somebody has 100’s of memos? Not me but many people do.

  5. KLynn

    1) does this support categories?
    2) can notes be marked private?
    3) can you search notes within the app?

  6. kindaskimpy

    3. Yes, you can search. As with any other app inside the Pre, just start typing to search. For example… I typed in “glasses” and it showed me the memo about my glasses.

  7. klipprand

    Do the memos sync to Outlook via Exchange ActiveSync? Thanks ;)

  8. kindaskimpy

    klipprand, if you are referring to syncing to outlook via desktop syncing, I must again beat the dead horse like Palm has been beating it since January…. there is NO official desktop sync solution for the Pre and webOS… activesync or not. Now, if you are referring to it syncing the memos with the cloud/exchange server and then back to your Outlook, I don’t see why not but until someone sets up such a scenario there is no way to find out.

    I’d really like KLynn’s questions to be answered.

    My use case is having hundreds of memos in as many categories as possible (currently I’m on my 1167th memo, after a couple of years of using Palm).

    I suppose coloring suggests categories, but it would surprise me if one couldn’t sort memos to see only the memos from one particular category.

    And it would sadden me if Palm didn’t think about it’s long time users who probably have too many memos for this admittedly pretty view to be too impractical. If that’s the case then I only hope someone brings an option to list the memos line by line as soon as possible.

  10. kindaskimpy

    Dom, I’d really like to answer your questions about it but understand that I have no way to do that until the phone is out and all of the services are in place. Right now, not even your Palm.com profile services are fully up.

  11. loocas

    i have two questions

    1) it looks like there are shortcuts keys… what key is that circle target looking thing?

    2) how do you change memo’s color and font size/etc?

  12. Konrad

    Loocas,

    I believe the circle in the shortcut that you are referring too would be the home button (trackball) just below the screen.

  13. kindaskimpy

    Loocas,

    2. Look at the update towards the bottom of the post

  14. loocas

    @kindaskimpy

    so the home button is also the modifier key for shortcuts? how does that work? i thought that clicking on that button from anywhere always invoke an action (switches to card view in some demo, and displaying all the application icons in another). so… how can this button both invoke an action AND act as a modifier key? am i missing something here?

    Palm enthusiasts are getting a sleekly designed, multi-touch smartphone (just without an app store)… two years after the iPhone launch.

    wink wink Pre. I jest, of course.

    The irony of criticising the competition for being late on one feature when palm two years late to market is not lost on me.

  16. kindaskimpy

    @matthew

    The irony might not be lost on you but evidently the fact that the Pre does have an App store is. Oh and by the way, around these parts, we call it App Catalog.

    And Matthew, the competition is late on ONE feature? Really? Okay, let’s count.

    Copy and Paste
    Push Notifications
    Multi-Tasking
    Adobe Flash
    MMS
    Turn by Turn Navigation

    I count six there.

    As an iPhone user, I’m excited about the Pre. But come now, some of your comments are just ridiculous.

    “Getting that functionality two years after launch”.

    You’re only getting that functionality on your Pre (which is as yet unreleased) two years after iPhone’s launch too. Looking at it another way, iPhone users have had all the functionality that the Pre mirrors from the iPhone for two years BEFORE launch of the Pre. They’re not rubbing that in your face.

    Compare apples to apples: compare the Pre to iPhone 3.0 for a fair comparison; how would comparing it to a two- or one-year old device be a fair comparison?

    PS: love the Pre, great for competition. Everyone wins!

  18. kindaskimpy

    You guys take yourselves and your iPhone worship waaaaaaaaaaay too seriously. I’m a huge Apple fanboy and I am just as willing to make fun of Palm for stuff like the Centro’s keyboard and the PalmOS’ 1983 look than I am of the iPhone’s shortcomings.

    The iPhone is by no means a bad device. It’s an amazing phone and out of the smartphones out there, it’s probably the smartest yet. Does that make it beyond reproach? No. Is the Pre beyond reproach? No.

    So breathe. Relax. And focus on something else for a while. I joke to make light of things… who wants to read a boring drab post?

    Without the iPhone there would probably be no Pre, just like without PalmOS and WiMo devices, there would have never been an iPhone. One thing begets another and another and another…. originality is limited, innovation is the true winner. The iPhone will step up its game, the the Pre will, then the iPhone again… and so on.

  19. Dom

    @kindaskimpy

    It’s OK. I understand. Thanks for giving us the information you can give at the moment.

  20. Dom

    @kindaskimpy

    Exactly. One other point that needs to be mentioned. Apple and Palm mostly appeal to different kinds of users.

    For example, as I found out only recently, I’d never be happy if I got iPhone. Coming from a Palm OS, I’d be missing all the features I’ve taken granted for so many years, on a seemingly outdated devices. I still use Treo 680 and I’m positive it will serve me well until I can get my hands on the Pre.

  21. Sergio

    Ok, the Memos and all the apps on the Pre look really cool, WebOS looks awesome, and personally I think the new Palm device and software beat most (if not all) of the competence…however I really would like to know about the way the Pre does the “synergy” with Gmail, Facebook, etc. There is a kind of user control over the system?, I personally (sometimes) hate my Treo680 when the contacts synchronisation “fails” and I find double entries and other small issues in my contact list. Where are going all the data? is the Pre saving the daily backup in to the internal memory or to the cloud? Wll I suppose that you lucky guys living in USA are going to enjoy it very soon. But what about we poor Europeans? is Palm close to a GSM flavour release for us?

  22. kindaskimpy

    My best friend swears by PalmOS. I have never been a fan of it but he is addicted and is acually the reason he is considering switching from his Centro on AT&T to the Pre on Sprint. He has that much faith in Palm… and he’s not a smartphone type of person… he can barely find the power button on his computer!

    I know I can hardly wait for June 5th. I’m going to run like a chicken with its head cut off when I buy the Pre at that launch part.y

  23. kindaskimpy

    @dom,

    by the way, it’s not letting me reply to you on the web browser post for some reason so I will answer you here. when you type inside a loaded page right now, it brings up the address/search bar and types into that.

  24. loocas

    keep the info flowing :) this is making my weekend even better than it already is.

    @kindaskimpy, would you see if universal search from anywhere on the phone will search the CONTENT of notes and memos and emails? thx.

  25. Sqe

    “Perhaps a copy and paste? (wink wink iPhone. I jest, of course. We know you’ll be getting this functionality soon, iPhone users… two years after launch.)”

    At least iPhone beats palm pre 2 years early. I mean where was Palm Pre 2 years ago?

  26. kindaskimpy

    @SQE, you’re a little late to the party, read the comments above you.

    @Loocas, it does indeed search the content of notes and memos and the like…

  27. Any categories in the memo app? I’ve got about 100 memos and it’d be tough to find them all without a category, or are they at least alphabatized so I can press the first letter and get to that?

  28. No Categories?
    UGH!
    Disappointing.

    Nothing like taking a step backward in features.

    -Will

  29. Edwin

    @kindaskimpy

    You were probably overwhelmed with many questions so you probably missed this question that was posted by someone earlier, but does the pre memos support lists? I know the little icons are nice and pretty with all the different colors but its a lot faster to browse through lists.

  30. kindaskimpy

    @edwin, I do sometimes miss questions sometimes but other times I just can’t answer for one reason or another. However, let me answer that question now… no, no memo lists support at launch.

  31. Michael

    Can you copy & paste selections, or just entire notes?

  32. Can you email memos ? Can you email a task? You didn’t cover this point and I was wondering if this can be done as it is important, especially if you can’t sync them.

  33. Ron

    it looks like the palm os memo will be available in the pre’s classic app. So hopefully that takes care of that.

  34. Again, does anyone know if you can email the memos ?

  35. chad

    My centro has the feature where you can mask (lock) the memo and I used it for all my internet passwords. Does anyone know if you mask the memos on the Pre?
