Someone was asking earlier to see how the Tasks app worked on the Pre since it hadn’t been shown before and I am nothing if not accommodating. ;) Below is a brief overview of what you can expect. Enjoy!

After tapping on the “Tasks” icon from the Launcher, you will come to a screen like this. Maybe not exactly like this because this Tasks app has already been populated with a couple of lists, but you get the idea.

1

If you want to create a new list, you tap that button on the bottom left corner and you will be greeted with a screen that looks like the following picture. There you can name your list and right below the name, start adding tasks to be done by tapping the button on the bottom left corner.

2

You check off items as you complete them and this is what a list looks like once completed.

3

If you’ve gotten your things done and would like to add something else to the list, not a problem. Just tap that bottom left button again and type away.

4

Need to edit something you’ve done? Maybe copy and paste? Maybe mark all as completed or unmark them all. Couldn’t be easier. Simply tap on the top left corner where you see “Tasks” and the application menu will come up, giving you all sorts of options.

And that is the “Tasks” app, my friends. Simple yet incredibly useful and above all, so easy to use!

UPDATE: For Laxidasical. This is what you get when you click that circled “i” button you were so curious about: (And just so there is no confusion, that envelope icon down at the bottom has nothing to do with the note. That is just a notification telling me I have received an e-mail.)

Any word on how this interacts with “the cloud”? Are tasks available online? Does this sync with any of the popular task managers online (RTM, etc.)?

  2. Tharomas

Thanks for the update! What about killing off a bad app? Ctrl alt del LOL. What memory manager or process killer do they use? I have iPhone and I’m a palm pre prenantic!

  3. Doga

Wow thanks for the quick response guys!

The task app looks even better then I expected :)

  4. Doga

    @THAROMAS:

I believe you can close apps by swiping it up when in card view.

  5. kindaskimpy

Pressing and holding the center button will also make the cards smaller, showing more of them to you at the same time and you can start reorganizing and closing (by swiping up) to your heart’s content.

Killing off a bad app? I’ve heard from my Sprint Mole that nothing has happened to require such a thing yet.

  6. KLynn

    1) are categories still supported?
    2) how do you sort, can you manually move entries? or can you use priority settings?
    3) can you set alarms for tasks?
    4) are recurring tasks supported?
    5) can you search within this app?

  7. I wonder what the little information buttons tell you that are next to each task (“i” with a circle around it)???

  8. kindaskimpy

I can answer only two of those questions. Yes, you can manually sort them. And yes, you can set different priority settings.

  9. kindaskimpy

Oh and yes, you can search. As with any other app inside the Pre, just start typing to search. For example… I typed in “Sean” and it showed me the task about picking Sean up.

  10. Joslin

Can you set a reminder for the due date so that tasks alert you with an alarm (kinda like the blackberry does)?

  11. Jared

What about repeating todos? What about views that combine categories? (ala datebk6)

In theory does Nova look magnificent, even if it seem to waste a lot of screen space (just as Symbian) but the more I see of the dramatically cut down PIM applications, the more afraid and disappointed do I get.. I did prefer the old Palm OS over Windows Mobile, mainly because the finer details / functionality of the basic PIM applications are more advanced… Like I can give priority in five steps and also see the priority number – not just in 3 invisible steps (as they suddenly seem to use here too) and that was only one of many examples!!

SKIMP!! When did you get a Pre!

  14. kindaskimpy

BDot, buddy, help me! There are strange people roaming around! i don’t know any of them!

  15. Bdot1276

The site is hot now. The webserver is gettin pounded, I can bearly get on the site anymore!

  16. kindaskimpy

bdot, keep trying. The problem’s been taken care of, it’s just taken a while to update

  17. joetour

Can you set a reminder time to buzz you when you want to complete the task. ??

  18. serpentor

    @kindaskimpy

can the pre repeat alerts incase you miss a call or message?

  19. kindaskimpy

With the Pre’s unobtrusive notification framework, missing an alert is pretty difficult to do. The alert doesn’t go away. It’s at the bottom of the screen like in the last screenshot above where it is showing me I have an email. Until I tap that email, it will be there, staying out of my way… as I go from app to app… even to the home screen.

  20. I know this is a little off topic, but I want to know a bit about the alert functionality of the Pre. One of the things I don’t like about my iPhone is that if I miss a call (or voicemail, SMS, etc.) the phone doesn’t actively alert me; there is no periodic *beep* telling me that I need to look at my phone.

Will the Pre periodically beep or flash or something to tell me that there is something that I need to pay attention to? My Danger HipTop worked pretty well in this regard.

    Thanx!
    Richard

Skimpy, Thanks for all the great pics! Could you tell us what’s in the drop down menu at the top right labelled “ALL”? I’m guessing it let’s you filter the view by checked, unchecked, etc.

  22. David Kuehner

I’ve been waiting for this. No other phone I’ve tried comes close to my old treo for PIM apps. I have a few questions if you have the time to answer.

I love the treo tasks. Can the palm pre tasks have the priority and category in the task list view? Can they be modified right from the list view? Also can you use a small font and get rid of the lines between tasks (as shown in your pics) so you can have more tasks displayed on one screen?

Thanks in advance if you can find the time to answer these.

@Paul was right with the first question asked on this page:

“Any word on how this interacts with “the cloud”? Are tasks available online? Does this sync with any of the popular task managers online ([Remember The Milk], etc.)?”

Too bad this question has been ignored so far. It’s important. Will my task lists on the Pre sync with my tasks on google, RTM, outlook, or is this just a dumb, unconnected task app like the one I have on my regular old cell phone?

  24. Sheila

Will the task app sync with my hosted exchange server account?

  25. patrick

@ ERik, I’d like to know this too. Will the pre sync with google tasks? What about outlook tasks and google tasks at the same time? I imagine the synergy would collect intelligently and keep these separated.

  26. Greg

Task are worthless on Pre. Cannot do repeat tasks, cannot sort, cannot say “only view tasks due today” or “don’t view tasks due in the future.” Worthless.

  27. chinohillspre

Is there software for my pc to sync up my pictures, video and phone book, so I may be able to sync and tranfer info to my other smart devices?

  28. Josh

I agree with Greg. Tasks app is worthless on the Pre. I can’t believe it doesn’t have a “sort by due date” option! What is the point of tasks if you can’t do that?? I am hoping Google figures out their stuff so that I can just browse to gmail.com/tasks.

  29. Bob-C

No repeat tasks is RIDICULOUS!! How can PALM OF ALL COMPANIES leave that out? Any connection that tasks in G-Calendar do not have this feature either?

  30. Ryan

    Just go to mail.google.com/tasks/android

No need for a app, web page works fine

  31. Is the earlier comments correct about repeat tasks? In the old Palms (650) you could set up a daily tasks that recurs each day or for awhile and when you complete it for example Tuesday, it will recur again on Weds to be completed again?

    Bruce

  32. Mel

Any ability to set an alarm? or recurring task? I use these functions alot. Would prefer not to clutter calendar

  33. Robert

Totally agree Task are worthless on Pre. You’ve have to have:
    - the ability to “only view tasks due today”
    - repeat tasks
    - sorting/grouping by category
    - exchange sync
    - notes portion of task needs to support formatting and attachments like outlook so when synced to exchange this stuff comes across

  34. Robert

tasks are literally the most important app to me

  35. the dude

NO, THERE ARE NO ALARMS OR REMINDERS FOR TASKS!!!!! Imagine my shock as I depend on tasks, have hundreds of them and can’t use the calender for them. I came from the treo where the tasks were functional, what happened???
