Non-Sprint Customers Unable to Take Palm Pre Out of Box

The first AT&T customer to leave the Sprint store left in a huff because he couldn’t actually take his Palm Pre out of the box and activate the phone.

Apparently the phone will FRY (which seems to be a regular theme) if it is activated while the Sprint network is still porting over your details from your old network.

Isn’t that actually SOP for all number ports? Those are a huge headache and hassle.

I seriously doubt that’s the case. I’m betting it’s an activation hiccup that causes the phone to flake out, but not brick. Wrong voltage charging the battery, yeah, THAT can brick a phone. I think the activation process definitely needs improvement, but I don’t think it’s possible to brick a phone just by trying to activate it.

This post is untrue. I was an AT&T customer and was able to transfer my number and my contacts from my Bold to my Pre. Obviously it was out of the box.

My experience as a Verizon customer moving to the Pre…

They ported my number. Told me not to turn on the device until my Verizon phone stopped working (so I knew the number had been ported). Then I was able to start up the phone and everything worked perfectly.

What I was told from the Sprint rep… The Palm Profile account links to your Sprint phone number. When you first turn on your phone, you setup a Palm Profile account, and if there isn’t an active number on the phone then all the settings are incorrect. If I failed to listen and started the phone anyways, I’d have to come back to the Sprint Store and they’d have to wipe my device and redo the Palm Profile setup.

Honestly, it was no big deal. My number ported within 15 minutes (maybe sooner, I didn’t try for 15 minutes, and it was already ported when I first checked). This is such a minute thing, I seriously didn’t consider it a hassle. I would assume it comes down to how the situation was presented to you. My Sprint Rep told me the situation and explained it, and I understood and was fine with it.

I hated Sprint more than any other carrier, leading up to the launch of this phone. I must admit, my experience today was great. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Also, I’ve waited in lines for almost every single video game system. The Sprint store (at least mine) was more prepared for the product launch and had a better game plan then any other product launch line I have ever been a part of (PS2, DS, X360, PS3, Wii). Congrats, and hopefully this is the new Sprint.

@Mikemick: Other than the Sprint reps telling me what they told you, my experience was/is exactly like yours. Verizon customer, hates Sprint, well prepared, quick port, etc.

I work @ a Sprint store. I noticed yesterday if the Pre was already on an account for a couple minutes before powering it on, the self activation was flawless. But if it was powered on before, you would have to retry activation a couple of times before the phone self activated.

This is not true.

I’m still waiting for my port to go through (don’t even ask) but I’ve already had 2 phone numbers on it.

The first number was a temporary number that was in the wrong area code, causing the porting problem. I went through the entire activation with it, including palm setup, and it did not work.

I was able to switch to a new temporary number and get it working without even turning off the phone. All I had to do was enter some special characters (which I will not post here), which opens up the phone to allow you to change the programmed number.

The Pre does not support OTA number changing, it has to be done in a special way, but it is definitely possible.

What the hell? I was from ATT and was, indeed, told to not use the Pre until my Treo would no longer function. They said that this would take two hours, but it only took about fifteen minutes. I was up and running right after that. What’s the the drama about your phone will FRY? It seems perfectly reasonable to assume that in order to port your number, one needs to hold off until one’s previous carrier’s network is no longer communicating. It isn’t that big of a deal.

Hi everyone, I want to post an update (see previous post above).

My number port came through today, and was automatically pushed to the phone. I had to go to the preferences on the dialer and update the network settings, and then restart. But no frying took place, everything worked.

FYI – there is also a way to manually program the phone which I learned from a Sprint associate, by hitting a certain key combination, but I’m probably not supposed to know that.
