Honestly, I can’t complain about my Pre much. Are there little tiny things that could stand to be tweaked or improved? Absolutely, but none of them are deal breakers for me and that seems to be the consensus but there because I’ve yet to hear from fellow Pre owners regretting their purchase. All in all, I’m very satisfied.

I couldn’t have been more satisfied with my buying experience either. I was invited to a Palm Pre Launch even on June 5th so my best friend and I were there at 6pm sharp to get our hands on the Pre. We had to wait for a few minutes for a Sprint sales rep to be available but while we waited, one of the two men from Palm at the party sat down by us and started demoing the Pre to us on his own personal Pre. As if I wasn’t excited enough!

I have to say the entire experience was great. Everyone from Sprint and Palm were incredibly helpful and attentive but perhaps the best bit of news to come from the party and our interaction with them was the Palm seems to be aware of the minor limitations we have all come across, like not being able to change your alert tone for text messages and IMs. The guys from Palm assured me they are aware of all those little things we’d want improved and they are working on it and thanks to the Pre’s over the air update mechanism, it’ll be incredibly easy to implement the changes.

  1. How could they possibly NOT implement 100% user-customizable alert tones? Amost EVERY OTHER PDA IN THE WORLD has it. That seems really, really forehead-slapping goof on Palm’s behalf.

Could you do a list of the “Yes” and “No” features? Comparing it to, maybe, something OTHER than an iPhone? Is there a website that has that already? All I can find on the web right now are iPhone comparisons. But I want to know how it holds up against the other PDAs out there (assuming people still realize there are still PDAs besides the iPhone and Pre in existence).

Yeah, I’m pretty happy w/ mine. I also have an iPhone provided by my job. Overall, I like the Pre better, but there are some things I like better about the iPhone. The real keyboard is the deal maker for me though – especially after being a long-time treo user.
Of course, being a developer, I have to love being able to have background processes! Definitely a rockin’ device!

I’m glad they’ll be able to fix many of the software issues in OTA updates. But what about the hardware issues that have been reported? Specifically, the heat and screen problems that are floating around all over the web? Doesn’t seem like something they’ll be able to fix with a patch.

  4. That would be nice if the Pre had over the air hardware updates as well :)

Hardware is going to have to go back to Sprint – exchange.

It is nice to read they are listening – would also like more control over font/colors and Echange sync’ing times too!

I was unable to get one. Does anyone know when more will be available…in store, online delivery?
Also I think my only concerns would be the very small keyboard and no visual voicemail. Is Palm able to add the second option of an on-screen key board incase some people dont want to use the physical one. Will they be able to add visual voicemail as well?

Yes and yes, though both will probably come from third-party developers and not Palm themselves

Haha, I dont mind where they come from, just as long as they can put it on the phone to use. Can’t wait!
    Thank you.

I completely agree. I love my pre. As you have said there are little things that need to be tweaked but overall there is not one deal breaker and its a huge improvement going from a PPC to this.

I am really looking forward to future software updates because I know that some of the small things are going to be improved upon. Congrats Palm on the great phone!!!

A developer is already making a VVM app. But truthfully VisibleVoiceMail is much better. The Pre is Spinvox ready: http://blog.spinvox.com/2009/05/22/spinvox-palm-a-pre-announcement/

The little things aren’t bothering me too much. It’s not yet a mature platform. I think they’ll add a lot to it over the coming months and fix the little quirks we’re experiencing now.

My only major concern is the battery. So far battery life has been pitiful. I’ve been tweaking settings and stuff, so hopefully improves. My Pre-diction is that a fair number of people (though not a majority of buyers) will return their Pres and cite battery life as the reason.

  12. All the reviews discussed battery life so anyone that bought the Pre should know that the battery life is similar to the iPhone (at least from what I have read).

I don’t think that many people bring their iPhones back because of battery life so why would you think people would bring their Pre back because of battery life? At least with the Pre you might have an option of buying a stronger battery since it is removable.

No issues here with my Pre! I’m happy with it! Other than the little minor nicks & picks discussed, it’s ok. I’m sure they (Palm) will remedy all the little problems. The battery thing was my only real gripe. I hope they come out with a larger capacity size &/or use software updates to help curve excessive battery drain. As far as apps, I know they’re coming! Overall, I couldn’t be more satisfied!

  14. As a palm user since 1997 (original US Robotics Palm Personal ;-) , and excited about the Pre since its announcement, here are the deal breakers for me:
    1. no address/memo categories
    2. it sync All Contacts in Exchange…yikes (tens of thousands…)
    3. read only for office documents
    4. no video capture
    5. no hardware button for nav…I don’t want to have to flick my finger just to move down an email
    6. no copy/paste in non-entry fields and web pages
    7. no tethering
    8. no simultaneous voice and data

In a lot of ways (multi-tasking aside), I’d feel like this would be a downgrade from my Treo. Pretty, cool, and fresh, but usability-wise I’d be making sacrifices….needless to say, I’m disappointed….

Are you all aware that there is already an update that you can download for the Pre? I downloaded at about 3:00 this morning and I notice that phone’s scrolling is more smooth and it seems to run a bit faster – AND – the battery life seems to be a bit better! And of course, I’m sure the battery-life will get better as the Pre becomes a normal part of our lives and aren’t playing with it 24/7!! Pandora, by the way, is FRIKIN AWESOME!! Wow, what a great freebie!

cant forward text messages but not a dealbreaker for me as for battery life 2 of my friends have IPhones and they carry there chargers with them. Now so do I!! But how can u not drain the batt when ur constantly finding new little tips on how to do or change things!?!? hmmm i hope they find a way to forward text messages but why the comparison with the IPHone!?!? geez that phone has been out forever and still cant forward text messages.

Is anyone out there having a problem with volume control on the ringtones, or am I just deaf. I have mine as loud as I can set it and can just barely hear the ringtones unless I am right there next to it and it isn’t in the case?
