There been a lot of speculation regarding which carrier in the UK would grab the Palm Pre, with all four networks apparently battling to gain exclusivity of Palm’s first webOS phone.
According to The Guardian newspaper O2 has fended off competing offers from Vodafone and Orange to nab the Pre in the UK. This will mean that there will definitely be a GSM version of the phone (if there was any doubt).
O2 also have exclusivity on the iPhone, and have the largest amount of subscribers in the Uk. Talk about smartphone dominance. Whether it’ll mean the cnsumer will lose out on value because of their strength remains to be seen, but it should mean users of the O2 see the 3G grow, and become faster and more reliable.
Apparently the phone will be available before Christmas.

This is terrible news. I was hoping it would come to Orange. I have a contract with
660 mins,
unlimited text,
unlimited data
50 video minutes
tetheriing!
for £25 a month (18 month contract) and I got a Touch Diamond for £10 at launch. We would never get this kind of deal on O2.
O2 currently have the iPhone for £155 with a £30 a month contract with 600 mins, 500 texts data and no tethering or £25 with 75 mins 125 texts data and no tethering. If the pre comes to O2 we’re gonna get shafted. Plus they won’t put the same advertising behind it because its still not going to be their flagship phone, the iPhone is.
