Are you listening Palm?

zyxwv88 – Well, I finally have some time to sit down and share my experiences with the Pre.
First of all I have to say that I am very impressed. The Pre is everything I hoped it would be and more. It does have a few issues, but nothing that is even close to a deal breaker for me.
The first thing I noticed was the battery life issue. I was traveling, and at one point I was trying to use the GPS for turn-by-turn navigation and I had forgotten and left the WiFi on. I managed to pretty much drain the battery in an hour.
I also found that there are some issues in using non-palm cables for charging. I’m not sure what’s up with it. I had a generic microUSB car charger, but it only briefly charged it, then it stopped. I used car charger to USB adapter of my wife’s that she uses for her iPhone in conjunction with the official Palm USB to microUSB cable and it wouldn’t charge. I finally ended up having to power up my laptop and plugging in the cable to it to charge the phone. It was a bit annoying.
Synchronizing was awesome though. Facebook and google synced without any issues at all. I had a small issue with my Exchange server setup, so I wasn’t able to get it working until today. I ended up having to set up an exception for myself for the mobile devices security because the Pre doesn’t really support PINs like they claim they do. If you are in an environment that is restrictive about that, you won’t be able to use Exchange. Luckily I’m the Exchange admin and in charge of security, so I gave myself an exception so I can use it.
The first day I had my Pre I was only able to sync with Facebook, because I wasn’t sure of the gmail settings and I didn’t have time to log in and check them. Facebook downloaded everything perfectly. It also downloaded their photos and I noticed that if I called anyone on my facebook list or vice versa, it would automatically show me those photos. I was very impressed with that.
As everyone and their dog has mentioned, the app store is a bit sparse currently, however all of the apps that are there currently are actually pretty good and most of them are free. Apps will show up though, so I’m not real worried about that.
The Pre is kind of funny on it’s learning curve. I had a little trouble getting used to a few things at first, and it does have a bit higher learning curve than an iPhone, although less than a Blackberry or WinMo phone. Once you get it all figured out though, it’s easy to forget that there was a learning curve because it’s so incredibly natural feeling. I feel like everything I do is faster on the Pre than it was on any other phone I’ve owned. I can find stuff faster, pull it up faster, and it loads faster.
It does have it’s times that it stutters a bit, although it seems that it was reduced when I did the 1.02 upgrade. It’s not enough to really detract for me, as it’s still more stable than my WinMo phone was.
The camera on it is fantastic. It’s almost as good as a standaline camera. It works great in lower light conditions, which is where almost all cel-phone cameras suck. It has a real flash, not just some cheesy LED that gives a sucky amount of light. The flash isn’t quite as strong as what my standalone camera has, but it’s not bad. This is one of the best cameras on a smartphone that I’ve ever seen. Sometimes I had some issues figuring out if I had actually taken a picture or not, but it wasn’t too bad.
Overall, this is just a fantastic phone. It was worth the effort it took to get it, and I honestly do believe that it’s a true iPhone killer. I had some high expectations, and it met with my expectations.
I do agree with what I saw on another post where it seems that the radio is a bit weak compared to some phones.
Also, the roaming data is turned off by default, so I had to find that option and turn it on.
jmangotti – More than I expected
Pre Loaded – Very great phone! No problems at all! I feel Palm has a hit! As soon as they release a boat load of apps, things will really be poppin’! I could careless about the iPhone fanboys & girls. People were saying in reviews about Palm being a serious player back in the PDA days, well I think it’s going to come there way again. Also app wise, I think Palm will have some SERIOUSLY USEFUL THIRD PARTY APPS, & not a lot of playful things! Not that it might not be anything like games & such, but I feel Palm’s third party player’s apps will have real uses! ![]()
gettinapre – Keys feel weird, but no errors, so keyboard problems are overhyped. Pretty much awesome sums it up.
jimhuff – Everything I expected and more – The only thing I miss is the 5-way navigator.

Good blog article… pretty much agree
Overall a great Phone!!!
Found it very easy to learn.
The keyboard is fantastic.
Camera is surprisingly good.
Was very disappointed that there was no alarm clock (used my last phone as my alarm when travelling) but, happy to say, the last update added this feature Yah!

There IS an alarm clock. After doing the 1.0.2 update in your phone, there should be an App in the Launcher called “Clock.” It’s in there.

Peter, When I referred to “the radio”, I was referring to the part of the phone that communicates with the towers. Both for talking and for data. I have some issues getting a strong enough. I believe there is a bug that they will need to resolve soon in the software as the signal seems to be a problem. As far as roaming, when you are in the phone, click on the “sprint” dropdown in the top left corner and choose “Preferences”. All the roaming (and other settings) are there.
Uriah, Tethering will come, there have been a few announcements about it. Even if Sprint doesn’t offer it directly, June Fabrics or other software companies will create software to handle tethering.

I too agree with the radio issues. My WinMo phone worked better than the Pre currently. I’m sure with some tweaks that can be remidied. I had the same problem with my Mogul then came the many OS upgrades and it began to work like a champ. Palm I suspect will do the same. Would also like to see Tasks and memos sync witht he calendar. There are so many possililities it’s amazing. I truly believe that this is only just the beginning. Love it so far. Now come on Apps…Netflix, Slingbox, Quicken, Voice/phone recording.

Before I trade my PalmTX and phone for this, I need to know if I can set up repeating appointments/reminders that will:
1. Sound off every day, week, month, whatever I choose.
2. Notify me of the event with a clearly-audible alarm.
3. Repeat the alarm several times (configurable), until I dismiss it.
4. Allow it to be turned into a floating event that will repeat until checked off.
Is this capability built in, or will I have to wait for an application to be built (Like Datebk4)
