Consider this a PSA (Public Service Announcement). I was just sitting here and thinking myself, “There are some small, yet important facts that not everyone knows about the Palm Pre. I must rectify this wrong!” Or something to that effect. Like what, you ask? I’m so glad you did, because I was going to tell you anyway.
-Did you know there is a built-in updates app on the Pre? It’s true. It will check for updates for your phone and allow you to easily install them.

-Did you know the information on your Pre gets automatically backed up every night? Also true, and you don’t have to do a thing.

-Did you know you can lock your screen on the Pre with either a simple PIN or a password?

-Did you know there is a “First Use” utility on the Pre as well? Yup. It will help you set up your phone for the first time and create or link up to a Palm online profile

I hope you left here knowing a little more than you did before… “The more you know…” And cue the shooting star…

Great! I didn’t know these things.
I would love to see some of the functions of the Tasks app. No video out there has shown how it works.

You stated that your an apple fan boy. I’m a graphic designer and all of my gadgets are mac. 2.3 g5 30″ and 22″ displays 17″mac book pro and a mac mini to use as a media server for the 52″lcd blu Ray is so yesterday. Anyway the big question for me is this. I have a me.com account as do you if your a fan boy I use the calender religiously is there a way that i will be able to link the calender on the pre to my i cal from my mac ( AND ) will it auto update from the cloud like it does now. I totally understand that 80% of the market is window’s users and all that jazz but if they were smart in there doings and added mac support to the phone allowing it to work with those applications it would be so much more appealing to those on the fence. ( one last question ) The Optional dock that costs a WOPPING $70 dude come on $70 for a frikkin charger i mean if they were throwing in an extra battery I could see it but for a charger wow. My question is, is there some magic some new tec that will allow the pre to teather to your computer so you can transfer data through the dock or is it just a charging station and not a data way point? Hopefully you’ll be able to get back to me before the saturday launch (( why did they do that )) and I will be going to best buy so i dont’ have to come out of pocket an extra 100 bucks…yea best buy…

Does everything get backed up? Even apps and settings? Notes, Tasks? Glad to hear of this functionality because I was worried about notes and tasks especially. What about restoring it? Is there some restore facility?

Where does everything get backed up to? My computer? the cloud?
If I had the pre loaded with say 8g of music that maybe got switched around for different stuff every day (so there would be no backed up database flag or anything like that), is that 8g of data being transferred over the phone network every day? could get expensive

Do you going to have full I’m support? Unlike the palm centro that you have to have Mundo in order to utilize it. ????

I don’t want to be a downie, but you have to keep in mind that the Pre is being compared to a software that’s a year old. The iphone 2.0 probably isn’t comparable to the palm pre at all except in its app store, but I don’t think you’ll find the situation to be the same with iphone 3.0. The pre will probably still be the king in multitasking, but in everything else (even web-browsing) I think its fair game. And the next-gen iphone is coming out too, so you have to pay attention not only to iphone 3.0, but also the specifications and capabilities of the new iphone.
But anyways I pretty glad that the pre is releasing soon. I’m a dedicated iphone user but I still hope that the pre does well because that only means that apple will do a lot more for the iphone in the future. Apple has been sitting on a little cloud and I think they’ve started to believe that they would be on top forever. But this phone (hopefully) will be a little wake-up call. I’m probably upgrading to the iphone 2009 because I have so many applications that I am very dependant on. Transfering all the data and rebuying and searching for similar apps on the pre will be a little onerous. And also because I kind of think that iphone 2009 running 3.0 will be a little bit better overall (just a little bit). I feel like apple’s new software will bring in developer’s like crazy. I watched the entire 3.0 SDK (I also watched the entire pre presenation a while ago but that’s besides the point) and was actually surprised to see that half of the keynote was dedicated to the developers.
Palm Pre is going to be great no doubt, but don’t forget about the future competition.

yea one more lingering question. Currently i have a instinct there are things i like and dislike about the phone one thing i hate and that apple got right was the fact that when you place the phone up to your face the screen stops all touch functions. Or when you iphone is in your pocket you can’t accidently dial people or start applications because of the light sensor in the phone little things like this go along way to enjoying the device. So is there a screen guard on when i’m in calls and when i place my phone in my pocket if i happen to press a button will it activate?

I think the charger (Touch Stone) will have other uses than just charging. I was watching a video where a demo rep stated they were coming out with a Touch Stone product line. Now I am looking forward to that, IF that is the case?
