Here’s a little food for thought… or as Sprint put it there, something to think about.
Gizmodo, not too long ago, set out to determine which of the 3 big US carriers offers the best overall 3G data service. When the result came in, ladies and gentlemen, ”On download performance Sprint wins overall, beating AT&T five cities to three, and beating Verizon in four cities,” said Wilson Rothman, Gizmodo Features Editor. “Proving that Sprint is a serious contender in almost any location… they should be taken seriously as a 3G and 4G data service provider.”

I think is a great company but I don’t know why so many people view Sprint to be a bad service provider. And sadly, I still think many people are not willing to switch to Sprint.

I also have no idea why people frown upon Sprint service.

As a gung-ho pre-Palm Pre camp outter (I’ll be there) and current iPhone user, maybe I can bring a fresh perspective.
I can’t speak for the general populous – only for ‘gadget nerds’ like myself. Aside from the early days when mobile handsets weren’t really all that flashy, most of what has driven me to a particular handset carrier isn’t price (or at least not primarily.) It’s the device. And since I’ve been using mobile phones (going back to circa 1996-ish) aside from a few Samsung phones (the competitor to the Razr, the Instinct) and now this phone, I never got the feeling that there were any cool devices on Sprint. And that’s why I stayed away.
If you’re talking about why the perception among people is that Sprint may not be a stable and reliable provider of phone service, I never really got that impression. And I solicited a lot of “Sprint related” feedback. I DID hear a lot of negative opinions about their customer support over the years (which I don’t even care about) and that it got a lot better. But if there’s any perception out there that Sprint is not a quality provider of mobile phone service, I think you have Verizon to thank for that. Their marketing around the guy with the glasses and the crew of engineers behind him has put an indelible image in people’s heads. That combined with the overall good perception of their phone service leads people (even those who really aren’t in a position to judge) to think that Verizon service is as good as it’s gonna get. I’m looking forward to evaluating Sprint based on all that I’ve heard about them — good and bad.

Sprint Premiere member (10+ yrs) here. I would never switch to ATT or Verizon for a specific phone. So I understand why this maybe true of people not wanting to switch to Sprint. Customer service as an acquired taste. Less we forget, Sprint/Nextel boast over 45 million subscribers. If only 10% cop a Pre, Palm and Sprint win period. Sprint has finally started to give us hardware. The network has always been superb, see Amazons Kindle for network ?’s. Hardware has been the achilles heel until now, heck I always wanted a blackberry and Sprint came thru. But, I am a Treo fan, and will someday have a Pre in my hand!!

I was with Sprint 10 years until the iPhone, and I loved Sprint. Yes, Verizon has marginally better network coverage, but not enough to justify its 50% price premium over Sprint service. And I’m eager to get back to Sprint, because while I love the iPhone, the honeymoon has been over, mainly due to AT&T’s HORRIBLE network coverage but also the iPhone’s soft keyboard which is NO substitute for a thumb type kbd, sluggish interface, multiple button presses and swipes to get anywhere, and slow app load times.

I second David Ahn’s Comment.
I also have the iPhone (initially with ATT service, but now using it on tmo) and the honeymoon ended long ago.
I also have sprint (since the mouse phone.) I guess I’m a sprint diehard cuz I’ve been with them thru the good times and bad and now about to be good again

And if you have Sprint and not AT&T, your calls on 3G won’t drop at least 5 times a day…. At least in Austin.
